Although Google hopes to expand the technology beyond the confines of its own web browser, DuckDuckGo and other opponents look set to stand in its way. Today, it registers an average of nearly 100 million search queries a day. Since then, DuckDuckGo has continued to gain market traction. Launched in September 2008, the service hit a milestone of 1 billion searches in 2013.
The company revealed back in April that it will block Federated Learning of Cohorts (FLoC) (opens in new tab), Google's alternative to third-party browser cookies, which for years have allowed advertisers to track the activity of web users.įLoC is currently undergoing a trial period, exclusively on Chrome. DuckDuckGo is part of a relatively new breed of search providers that have come to be known as private search engines. DuckDuckGo is a search engine with one main USP: it doesn’t collect private user data. The release is the latest attempt by DuckDuckGo to improve user privacy as more and more people become aware of the risks posed by sharing too much information online. Users can join a private waitlist now by downloading the DuckDuckGo app for iOS or Android. The feature is available in beta testing now, with top email services like Gmail and Yahoo included.
